New Server

Our host has moved us onto a new server so there should be some speed improvements to the site. I've generally been very happy with the hosting, what are your thoughts? For me in the UK the speed has been great!

One of the coolest things I've seen in a while is firefly, a little app that sits in the bottom right window of Alexa Share and allows you to chat to other people on the site. Cool huh?

Crazy Gain/Loss Figures

As you may have noticed, the gain/loss figures have been a bit crazy this past month! This was due to my host deleting my cron jobs without telling me (grumble grumble) so my apologies.

I think this brings a more social aspect to Alexa Share (basically my attempt at Web 2.0 if you could call it that).

We have now turned off this restriction. It was checking that your referer was valid, but we realise not everyone sends a referer as it can be disabled.

Alexa Has a New Look

Looks like Alexa.com has changed their layout. I have to say it looks much cooler than the old one did, take a look at the changes here or read about it.

Why are they a few days behind?

Went along to Internet World today and was suprised to find one of the speakers at a lecture I attended, was from a man who works in the Amazon Web Services department (the service that provides Alexa Share with the Alexa.com API). He was basically plugging the new Amazon S3 service, but I went up to him after the lecture had ended and asked him why all of the graphs and data were a couple of days behind on Alexa. He replied, "this is because we receive 300TB of statistical data per day and it takes a long time to process".

What?

...

Did I hear him say 300 terabytes of data per day?

Bloody hell!

No wonder why the graphs are a few days behind!

That shut me up for the rest of the day...

Account Access

I was looking at the security logs the other day and found that someone has been attempting to brute force my "alexashare" account password. Let me say this now, there are absolutely no additional admin features that I have put in on the alexashare account (for that reason) so if you do manage to crack my password (which is now changed by the way) then you might as well create a new account and buy the same 4 shares as I have. It's just a regular account let the rest of us :-P

Problem Fixed

At last I have managed to fix the problem. Because of the API change the format was different, so it was actually my script that was getting confused. If a site did not have values for all 3 reach per million categories, it would move on to the next line of the API which usually contains a large number (hence the massive price increase). Anyways now that crisis is over, if you do spot any bugs please let me know asap. I am sorry for the inconvenience (or convenience for many of you).

Millions and Millions

There is a bug, either in my code or the new Alexa API, that seems to make some websites worth a substantial amount more than they are. I am looking into the problem and have contacted Alexa, but this is why some people have suddenly earned millions from one website. I sincerely apologise, but there is nothing I can do except try to find the solution soon. I cannot revert the site back to a few days ago as I only have fresh backups, and I am sure people would not take too kindly to this. So sorry for the inconvenience, I know its not fair on some people, but all I can do is apologise until the problem is fixed.

New Code

Alexa have changed the way users access their API, so I had to update my code to send the new strings. That was easy enough, but what I didn't realise was that their API format had also changed, so sites no longer updated on Alexa Share! After spending a frantic half-hour trying to get it working again I finally succeeded, however if anyone spots any problems please let me know asap through the contact form.
Phew... I am still shaking!

User Graphs

We now have graphs for each user, showing the gain or loss for each day of the week. In order for it to work effectively you should log in to your portfolio and update your shares once a day. To view you or another user's graph, click on the icon next to the word 'Total' in the portfolio.

I removed the web directory as it was a pretty useless feature, however I have had another idea that I will implement shortly. In the mean time, I have changed the top bar that says who you are logged in as, to include how much cash you have available. This will help you when buying and selling shares.

People are asking me why they get an error that says "Maximum 50 update requests allowed per day!".
This is because everytime you click on update, Alexa charges us a small fee for their data. With the current amount of traffic we receive, it would cost us more than $400 every year! So we have decided to limit the update requests to save us some money, until we can balance it out from advertising and donations. So please help us, and click on the google ads at the bottom of the page, and feel free to send in your donations to keep Alexa Share going.

When you login you will notice a 3rd bar which displays the total new messages you have. Click the link at anytime to view your inbox, its all pretty straight forward.

Site Improvements

First off I would just like to say that the referal code 'START5' is no longer available. I think we have enough players now, and to ensure fair play you will start off with $10,000 only.

As you may have noticed we now have a forum where you can chat, report bugs, request features and discuss shares. I encourage you all to join, and hopefully we can get a nice little community going... * sniffs *

There have been a number of improvements and updates to Alexa Share, including 2 major bug fixes when buying shares. I do aplogise for the hassle caused so far, and please do let me know on the forum if you come across any more problems.

So far so good, its been 3 days and we have 121 members so thats not too bad. There are more new features to come so watch out!

Alexa Share vs Alexadex

I was originally inspired to create Alexa Share after playing Alexadex. I thought the concept was brilliant and decided to make my own version.
However, Alexa Share is not a clone of Alexadex. Yes the idea is the same, and so is how some of the data is displayed, but Alexa Share is still unique in some of its features.
I am not in any way encouraging people to leave Alexadex, I am just asking you to join Alexa Share. Have an account on both sites, and if you screw up 1 then leave ;-)
But seriously Alexa Share is just a bit of fun, and there is nothing wrong with some competition. I will try to get through as many bug fixes/feature requests as I can, and hopefully Alexa Share will grow. Thank you for your support so far.
